How to Choose a Computer Repair Service (What to Ask Before You Hand It Over)

Seven questions that separate a straight repair service from one that will surprise you on the invoice.

The short answer

Pick whoever will diagnose before quoting, tell you the price before starting, explain the fault in plain language, and be honest when a repair is not worth the money. Those four behaviours matter far more than the size of the operation.

Questions worth asking

  • Is the estimate free, and am I charged anything if I decline the repair?
  • Will you tell me the total price before you start the work?
  • What happens to my files during the repair, and what is your advice about backing up first?
  • If the repair turns out not to be worth it, will you say so?
  • Roughly how long will it take, and what would delay it?
  • Can you handle pickup or drop-off, or does the machine have to come to you?
  • Will you explain what was actually wrong when I get it back?

Warning signs

Be careful with anyone who quotes a firm repair price over the phone without seeing the machine, pressures you into a full replacement before diagnosing anything, cannot explain the fault in words you understand, or guarantees data recovery. Recovery outcomes depend on the device and the damage, and nobody can promise them in advance.
