How to tell it is just the screen
- Plug in an external monitor or a TV with an HDMI cable. A clean picture there means the computer itself is fine.
- Cracks, black blotches, coloured lines or a bright spot spreading over time all point to the panel.
- A screen that stays completely dark but the laptop clearly powers on may be a backlight or a cable rather than the panel.
- A laptop that was dropped hard enough to crack the screen may also have hinge or case damage worth checking at the same time.
Use it in the meantime, carefully
An external monitor keeps a cracked laptop usable while you decide. Avoid closing the lid hard and keep pressure off the damaged area — spreading cracks can eventually reach the parts of the panel you are still using.
