Why there is usually hope
A computer that will not start has failed somewhere in power, display, memory or startup. None of those are the storage drive. When the drive itself is healthy, reading the files from it is a routine job even if the computer never runs again.
When it gets harder
If the drive is the part that failed, the outlook depends on how it failed. Logical corruption and deleted files are often recoverable. A drive that clicks, beeps or is not detected at all may need specialist equipment, and in some cases the data cannot be recovered at any price.
What to do right now
- Stop powering the machine on repeatedly — each attempt can make a failing drive worse.
- If a drive is making unusual noises, leave it powered off.
- Do not install recovery software onto the same drive you are trying to recover from.
- Get the drive tested before deciding anything about the computer itself.
